Shaping Tomorrow: Mitigation and Adaptation in the Face of Climate Change

Hello!

The time to act on climate change is now—our future depends on the choices we make today.

Destination 2045 Plan:

Shaping the Future of Queensland Tourism

Image description

The Queensland Government has launched an ambitious 20-year vision to transform tourism through the "Destination 2045 Plan". This long-term initiative is focused on unlocking opportunities for growth, especially in ecotourism, and making the most of global events like the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The goal? To build a thriving, sustainable tourism industry that benefits everyone.

Community input is crucial for developing this long-term tourism strategy. Tourism has the power to transform communities, create jobs, and support local businesses in a thrivable way. By seeking feedback from the community, the government intends to develop an effective strategy to amplify tourism’s positive impact across the state.

THRIVE Project has responded to the Queensland Government's call by submitting recommendations for developing tourism in light of the 2032 Olympics. The project focuses on leveraging the natural beauty of the region while integrating advanced technologies, such as AI, IoT (Internet of Things), and Digital Twin, alongside Science-Based Targets. This approach aims to meet environmental targets and implement best practices in urban environments.

THRIVE Project is collaborating with the Brisbane City Council (BCC), and both public and private sector institutions, to create awareness and improve the thrivability of both natural and urban environments. Thrivability refers to achieving a flourishing ecosystem that ensures the well-being of all forms of life on the planet, indefinitely, without diminishing the regenerative capabilities of ecosystems. These goals align with the efforts needed to promote sustainable tourism. A thriving society will naturally attract more tourists.

The Sunrise Movement is a youth-led political organisation that advocates for bold climate policies, most notably the Green New Deal. Founded in 2017, the movement empowers young people to push for climate justice through grassroots organising and direct action.

The Sunrise Movement aims to tackle the climate crisis while ensuring a just, equitable transition to a green economy, one in which people can not just survive, but thrive. With an engaged base of young activists, The Sunrise Movement has made valiant efforts in mobilising voters by highlighting the dangers of climate inaction and urging stronger policies to safeguard the planet’s future.

Thriving Prizes

THRIVE Project is proud to integrate thrivability into every aspect of our initiatives, including our prizes for the Thrivability Matters Webinars and Thriving Minds

These prizes are deliberately designed as digital gifts to reduce waste, with each one symbolising our commitment to a thrivable future. For every prize awarded, we plant a tree—helping to offset the average annual carbon footprint of one individual.

This action underscores our shared responsibility for the planet and highlights the power of collective action in achieving thrivability. Together, we are working towards a resilient, regenerative, and thriving future.

APRIL FOCUS -

Climate Action: Mitigation & Adaptation

Tackling climate change requires both mitigation (reducing emissions) and adaptation (adjusting to its impacts). Simple actions like cutting energy waste, supporting sustainable businesses, and choosing eco-friendly transport help reduce our carbon footprint. At the same time, investing in climate-resilient infrastructure, regenerative agriculture, and community preparedness ensures we are adapting to a changing world. Every choice matters. Join us in building a future that’s not just sustainable, but thrivable!

Rising to the Challenge

After floods destroyed her village, Amina knew they had to adapt. She led efforts to plant mangroves along the coast, reducing erosion and creating a natural barrier. Meanwhile, her community switched to solar energy and trained farmers in drought-resistant crops.

When a government official visited, he was amazed. “You’ve combined mitigation—reducing emissions—with adaptation, preparing for climate impacts.”

Amina smiled. “We had no choice. Climate change is real, but so is taking action.”

As the sun set over their thriving village, she knew they weren’t just surviving—they were building a resilient future for generations to come.

The Road to Gender Equality - Part 2 of 3

Inequality intensifies in the face of climate change and gender is at the heart of that divide. Our upcoming whitepaper explores how empowering women and girls leads to smarter, more sustainable climate solutions.

At THRIVE, we’re uncovering why gender equity isn’t just fair but essential for a resilient future. Get ready to dive into the research, insights, and stories driving change.

Coming next month. Don’t miss it. 💡

The whitepaper will be released soon! Be sure to check our May newsletter for more details on its content.

THRIVE Recognition 🏆

We are thrilled to congratulate our Thriver, Ben Shaw, for presenting his Master's research project, "Assessing Business Footprints on Biodiversity Through Impact Metrics", at this year’s Victorian Biodiversity Conference. His research explores the role of impact metrics in evaluating corporate sustainability efforts, aligning with THRIVE’s mission of driving regenerative change. We look forward to seeing more of Ben’s contributions in this space and celebrating the impact he continues to make!
