The Well-Being Metric: Tracking Progress, Creating Change

Hello!

Ever wondered how we can build a healthier future? It begins with tracking the right things—because what we measure, we can improve, from our health to our overall well-being.

"Well-being is not a goal, it is a by-product of a life well lived."

- Eleanor Roosevelt

One in seven women in Victoria, Australia, have been inspired to be active by VicHealth's "This Girl Can – Victoria" campaign, which has empowered over 285,000 women. Based on Sport England's viral sensation, the campaign has enjoyed similar success in its inaugural year. Its effectiveness lies in its inclusive messaging and social media engagement, which make exercise accessible and enjoyable. By fostering community support, the campaign continues to evolve, addressing changing needs and encouraging more women to participate in sports.

The campaign has inspired millions of women globally to engage in physical activity, enhancing their mental well-being. Cultural, physical, and societal barriers for women in sports is a Complex Wicked Problem.

THRIVER'S VOICE -

Investing in Well-Being

"Mental health and well-being are crucial components of building a thrivable world and a key focus of THRIVE’s Social Governance cluster. Mental health intersects with many areas of social governance, as demonstrated by the Systems Thinking approach. Company operations, government policy, education systems, employment, and access to services are all interconnected with mental well-being on both individual and societal levels.

The relationship also extends to our interactions with the natural world and non-human animals. By investing in and promoting mental health and well-being, we can more effectively progress toward creating a more thrivable world."

- Mike Hill, Research Assistant, MA in Politics and Policy, and BA Social Work.

Metrics: Health & Well-Being

This month, we explore how tracking health and well-being drives positive change. Measuring access to care, mental health support, and disease prevention helps build stronger, more resilient communities. Sustainable health metrics highlight gaps in healthcare, promote healthier lifestyles, and guide informed decisions. Prioritising well-being means valuing both physical and mental health, ensuring no one is left behind. By leveraging data-driven insights, we can create a healthier, more equitable future for all.

Memory Munetsi (Team Assistant):

Mindfulness Movement

In the serene town of Vitalis, the Health & Well-being Centre was a sanctuary for those seeking balance. Mia, a yoga instructor, had been struggling with burnout, her energy drained from endless classes. She visited the centre, where holistic practices were seamlessly integrated with modern science.

Guided by therapist Sam, Mia embraced mindfulness, nutrition, and movement tracking. Her metrics—sleep quality, stress levels, and activity—were woven into a personalised plan.

Weeks later, Mia felt renewed, her vitality restored. She shared her journey, inspiring others to prioritise their well-being. The centre became a haven, proving that true health is the harmony of mind, body, and spirit.

The Road to Gender Equality - Part 1 of 3

Climate change is a threat to all, but its effects are not felt equally. THRIVE researchers are currently working on an upcoming whitepaper. It will explore the critical link between gender equality and climate change—and why addressing this connection is essential for building a more resilient future.

Climate change exacerbates inequality, with women and children facing disproportionately higher risks. While women are often portrayed as victims, they are also powerful agents of change, playing a pivotal role in shaping stronger, more sustainable societies. Research shows that when women are empowered and included in decision-making, it leads to better resource distribution and more effective climate solutions.

The whitepaper will be released soon! Be sure to check our April newsletter for more details on its content.
