Hello Thriver!

November is the month we focus ourselves toward SDG7 – Affordable & Clean Energy // Science & Technology.

Affordable & Clean Energy // Science & Technology

Affordable & Clean Energy // Science & Technology

We consider the energy humanity relies on daily and whether our science and technology for harvesting, producing, and consuming various forms of energy are guiding us toward a thrivable future.

Join us at the THRIVE Project as we move beyond sustainability and embrace a thrivable future.

Only within the moment of time represented by the present century has one species - man - acquired significant power
to alter the nature of the world

- Rachel Carson, marine biologist, author, and conservationist

This month’s story, "Ayana’s story - A Well of Change", highlights the theme of "Affordable and Clean Energy: Science and Technology". In a remote Ethiopian village, Ayana’s life revolves around long journeys to fetch water, often contaminated and dangerous. Her story reveals the impact of innovative, sustainable solutions like solar-powered water pumps, which deliver safe, clean water right to the community. By showcasing how science and technology can meet essential needs, the story highlights the promise of affordable energy to drive health, safety, and new beginnings for families across Ethiopia.

Ayana’s story - A Well of Change

Ayana’s story - A Well of Change

In a small, sun-drenched village in rural Ethiopia, Ayana smiles as she watches her daughter, Lila, play in the dirt by their modest home.

Yet each day, Ayana faces a painful choice. To keep her family going, she must leave Lila alone to walk miles to fetch water, hoping it’s safe enough to drink. More and more, though, Lila complains of stomach pain, and Ayana grows fearful.

One evening, as Ayana returns, she finds Lila curled up in discomfort. “Mama, my tummy hurts,” Lila whispers, wincing, tears in her eyes.

Ayana’s heart sinks as she kneels beside her, feeling powerless. “I know, my love. I am so sorry, I wish I could bring cleaner water.”

The water source is far and often dirty but it’s all they have. As Lila’s stomach cramps worsen, Ayana’s worry deepens, knowing the water is making her daughter sick but feeling trapped by their circumstances.

Then, hope arrives as news of a solar-powered clean water pump installation spreads through the village. For the first time, clear, freshwater is accessible close to home. Ayana fills a jug, feeling relief and gratitude.

This sustainable solution, powered by the sun, ensures a healthier future and reduces their reliance on contaminated water, giving them both the peace and resources they need to thrive.

THRIVER'S VOICE

Thrivability Through Climate-Smart Solutions for Sustainable Farming

Thrivability Through Climate-Smart Solutions for Sustainable Farming

Meet Maryam, a dedicated researcher and advocate for sustainable agricultural development. Through her ground-breaking work in climate change, particularly in alignment with SDG13 - Climate Action // Mitigation and Adaptation and SDG7 - Affordable & Clean Energy // Science and Technology, she has made significant contributions to addressing the challenges faced by small farming communities in Iran. Inspired by various Sustainable Development Goals, Maryam’s research focuses on innovative, data-driven solutions that enhance environmental sustainability.

Her extensive fieldwork and academic research have provided farmers with strategies that not only improve productivity but also reduce ecological footprints. By developing climate smart agriculture models, Maryam has empowered communities to adopt more sustainable practices. These practices not only increase crop yields but also enhance resilience against climate change.

Thrivability in agriculture merges smart solutions with sustainable practices, building resilient communities and a healthier planet.

THIS MONTH

November’s Focus - SDG7 – Affordable and Clean Energy // Science and Technology

November’s Focus - SDG7 – Affordable and Clean Energy // Science and Technology

This month, we focus on Affordable and Clean Energy through the lens of science and technology. The intersection of these fields offers ground-breaking solutions, making clean energy more accessible, affordable, and transformative for our planet.

Scientific and technological advancements have been pivotal in the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and geothermal. These renewable resources are essential for reducing emissions and minimising environmental impact. Innovations such as energy storage, smart grids, and decentralised energy systems are making renewables more reliable and economical.

Meanwhile, breakthroughs in green hydrogen and carbon capture are not only enabling cleaner energy production but also reversing some of the environmental damage from past energy practices.

As science and technology evolve, we see a greater opportunity to deliver clean energy not only on a global scale, but also in ways that are accessible, affordable, equitable and sustainable to communities all around the world.

Economic Practices in Community Renewable Energy Projects

Economic Practices in Community Renewable Energy Projects

The article explores how community renewable energy (CRE) projects can drive sustainable economic growth through practices like local ownership, equitable financing, and policy support. CRE projects empower communities with financial benefits, resilience, and environmental gains by fostering local engagement. The piece emphasises collaboration and supportive policies to scale these efforts, aiming for a more democratised energy system that aligns economic and ecological goals.

Webinar Replay

Affordable and Clean Energy // Science & Technology

On November 19th, 2024, the Thrivability Matters Webinar focused on SDG7 - Affordable and Clean Energy // Science & Technology. The discussion highlighted the significance of Community-owned energy, holistic technology that advances us to sustainability; and an Australian approach to rewire households and communities to clean and affordable electricity.

Our speakers – Dr. Jarra Hicks, Director at Community Power Agency; Dr. Sadaf Taimur, Director of Sustainability and Circularity at Goodwill Industries; and Calum Harvey-Scholes, Pilot Deployment and Research Manager, Rewiring Australia, shared their expertise with a global audience through our online event.

The live-streamed session was graciously hosted by Michael Hill, THRIVE Project Research Assistant and expertly moderated by Dr. Karan Kapoor from the THRIVE Project's research team, who guided a compelling panel discussion.

Towards the end of the webinar, we found a winner for the THRIVIA segment of the event. For asking the best question of the night, we awarded Neil Parry from Melbourne, Australia, with 10 indigenous seedlings!

Neil asked - Is it possible for community-led renewable energy projects to be adopted within a metropolitan context - i.e. in a suburb - or is it more for regional areas?

THRIVABILITY SPOTLIGHT

Integrating Thrivability Into School Curriculums

The Thrivability Matters Olympiad

Schools in Australia and around the world are participating is several Olympiads. These are mainly competitions between students on various subjects in science and mathematics.

For example, the Australian Science Olympiad (ASO) provides an opportunity for highly motivated science students to participate and enrich their skills in subjects such as physics, chemistry, environmental science and biology.

The competitive spirit in these competitions is inspired by Olympic games. What the athletes achieve in track and field events the students achieve the same high standards in academics.

The THRIVE Project is initiating an Olympiad program for schools for educating children on sustainability and thrivability using innovative and stimulating gamification techniques.

A poster series has been initiated for inclusion on social media channels and to serve as exemplars for school teachers teaching the children about sustainability and thrivability. Schools will formally join the Thrivability Matters: Olympiad program via an app.

For more information on how to participate and access to downloadable resources for school, check out the Thrivability Matters Olympiad Educational Programs.
